This tutorial understands what port number ping uses. Ping , which is a tcp/ip utility is used for testing basic network connectivity between two systems. Ping does not use any transport layer protocols like TCP or UDP. It uses ICMP protocol. The below image shows the packet structure of ping captured using wireshark packet analyzer.
In the above diagram , any transport layer protocols like TCP or UDP is not visible. The ICMP header comes under the IP header as shown. Port numbers which is used in transport layer protocols like TCP or UDP where source and destination port numbers are included in the respective headers. Port numbers are used to identify applications on destination systems. When ping used, there is no application which is contacted on the remote system. It is only the connectivity which is tested using ping.
