How to Test RIP Passive interface

The tutorial explains the methodology which can be followed to test the passive interface feature on RIP enabled Cisco routers. Passive interface is a feature, which when configured, would not allow RIP updates to flow on that particular interface. Setup the lab topology as shown above. Enable RIP on both the routers. Connect a wireshark installed computer to the switch, to which R1 is connected.

Start wireshark on the PC. The RIP updates should be observed in wireshark. Enable the interface , 192.168.1.1 as a passive interface. Observe RIP packets in wireshark. There should not be any RIP updates observed in wireshark, after passive interface is configured, which would verify the functionality of the feature.
