Native vlans are sent untagged over a trunk port. In this article the methodology to test native vlans are explained. Setup a topology as shown in the below diagram. Configure three vlans on the switch, namely, vlan 2, 3 and 4. Setup vlan 2 as the native vlan. Connect the ports on the switch to which the PC’s are connected as members of vlan 2. Setup wireshark on a PC and mirror the trunk port to analyzed packets flowing in and out of the trunk.
Ping PC1 from PC2. Analyze the packet in the wireshark system. The ICMP packet (ping) which is flowing through the trunk link should not be tagged with the vlan header.
